Båtstuga

This project is a proposal for a 3 weeks architectural competition course where students were asked to design a small ferry terminal by the great Göta Alv river in Gothenburg.

When traveling down the Swedish west coast, one might notice clusters of small huts often called båtstuga. These traditional huts have a certain romantic aura since they used to serve Swedes as boat storage and workshops for fishermen back in the days.

Our proposal is inspired by the iconic shape of a båtstuga.
The common geometry of a båtstuga is tweaked by slightly inclining the exposed lightweight beam structure holding up the heavy pitched roof. The pitched roof is then partially flat unlike the original båtstuga as well as the building is covered with glass and plywood instead of colorful timber planks and small windows. Finally, a grand passage splits up the building - making people walk “over” the water while entering the ferry or the terminal.

Our aim was to enhance the raw essence of the båtstuga as well as providing the magnificent view over the river to the passengers.
