BREAKWATER

Hostel & Sea Baths

Due to increased tourist attraction our mission was to design a sustainable hostel and bath in the heart of Reykjavík, at Grandi namely near Reykjavík harbour.

Iceland is known for sudden climate change and near the coast the weather can get rather brutal. Therefore the building has been buried into the ground making its facade work as a “breakwater”. The bath is at the first floor, partly under the hostel and behind the perforated facade. The hostel is at the second floor enjoying the framed view over the sea. To enter the hostel rooms you must go through a courtyard.

Runners, cyclists, rollerskaters etc. tend to pass through the lot every day so the roof of the building becomes a public platform rather than a private garden.
