IRRIGATION

Power Station

A complex power station that offers its inhabitants to refuel in various ways, weather it’s by eating a sandwich, taking gas, recycling or just exploring the nature.

Irrigation is a service station that is buried under the highway giving its visitors space away from the heavy traffic running above it. The buildings shape derives from the shape of trenches, referencing the Flóaáveita which was a crucial irrigation system built almost a century ago. That structure was a breakthrough at that time, giving the very flat lands enough of water and nutrition to make them fertile all year around. The station does also join an ancient trail, known as Ásavegur, under the highway making the station not only iconic for it´s shape but also symbolic for its historic references and retention. Thus, the station not only constitutes a service location for drivers but is also a transit point for cyclist, horse riders and pedestrians who travel around the bay.

I find the modern gas station often very alien in its rural context, polluting the experience and the atmosphere of a place. So my aim was simple: to change that experience and to preserve the extraordinary panoramic view over Flóahreppur bay.
