(un)Balanced block
Apartment building
An apartment block that had to provide two types of apartments.
The smaller apartments were supposed to be 40-55m2 and the larger ones 55-60m2.
The building takes its shape from the surrounding. It’s parallel to a row of similar apartment blocks on the west side of the building.
My aim was to make the building more welcoming to the public, whether it is just by acting as a canopy, by providing an easy access to the already existing public garden or just by enjoying a cup of coffee at the café on the groundfloor. To make that possible, the volume that contains the apartments has been elevated from the groundfloor where one might question how the structure is actually balanced.
To further enhance that (un)stability the flats are fully glased, from floor to ceiling, so they appear to be hanging on the concrete mass. The concrete mass sits on the glass entrance at the south end of the building, looking like its tip-toeing on the glass.
The whole block contains 10 two floor apartments, 10 one floor apartments, sauna baths, café and an underground parking area.
